Sri Lanka plans digital phytosanitary certificates

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka is to start a pilot project with Australia to issue digital phytosanitary certificates which can make is easier and faster to export plant and plant based goods from the country.

At the moment printed certificates are issued by the plant quarantine unit of Sri Lanka’s Agriculture Department.

Sri Lanka has been chosen as a test location in the Asia Pacific region to issue digital phytosanitary certificates under a United National International Plant Protection Convention, the state information office said.

A pilot project will be conducted with Australia’s Department of Agriculture and Irrigation. The cabinet of ministers had approved the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Australia to do it.
