49 Years On – a Tribute to The Beatles with Lasith Fernando

On the 30th of January, 1969 – 49 years ago – The Beatles climbed the rooftop of Apple Corp, plugged in their instruments and started to play.

The cold London air was so chilly that John Lennon had to borrow Yoko Ono’s fur coat and a crew member had to hold a constant stream of lit cigarettes so George Harrison’s fingertips would stay warm enough for him to play.

And while most of the people gathered in the busy London streets below marveled at seeing the fab four playing live for the first time in over two years – and a few cranky businessmen complained about the racket above – they would have all surely stood still and listened desperately if they knew that they were hearing the end of an era played out on a cold and windy rooftop. It was The Beatles’ last ever public performance.

Well, come January 30th this month it’ll be 49 years since that iconic gig so I thought that I’d pay a little tribute to The Beatles in my own humble way. So come join me at The Station, grab a drink or three (it’s Poya the next day), and I’ll sing you a few of my favorite Beatles tunes while you humm along.

Oh and also, I’ve got a free beer on offer for anyone who comes and jams any of these 5 songs that The Beatles played for the Rooftop Concert:

“Get Back”

“Don’t Let Me Down”

“I’ve Got a Feeling”

“One After 909”

“Dig a Pony”

Oh and don’t forget, entrance is free.

See you guys on the 30th!

Music starts at 7.
